Today we will be tasting a great lineup of Spanish wines.
Mas de Leda Tempranillo ($19.99) – The 2007 Mas de Leda is made by the famed Mariano Garcia, the former winemaker for Vega Sicila. It’s 100% Tempranillo, with some coming from Toro and some from Ribera del Duero. Dense and luscious with plush, ripe, dark berries, melted bittersweet chocolate, a touch of cinnamon and all spice. It’s all wrapped in a jacket of fine grained tannins. Try it with something roasted in the oven. You won’t be disappointed.
Esenzia old vine Garnacha ($15.99) – The ESENZIA Old Vine Garnacha is produced by Bodegas Tempore from 55 to 60 year old vines from the Bajo Aragon subregion of Aragon, Spain. The grapes are both organically grown and sustainably farmed. Grapevines that struggle, produce more intense and complex wines than grapes that have good soil and water conditions, gnarled old vines naturally struggle thru-out the growing season, regardless of growing conditions. Vines that were considered, good, but not great, when younger tend to kick it into high gear as they age and become less efficient. This Garnacha is unoaked. The color is cherry red with a dark center. The nose is intense red fruit, raspberry, cherry, plum with a little dusty chocolate. There are bright extracted red berry flavors along with rich dark chocolate upfront the mid-palate brings in some weak tea and cocoa powder. There are very smooth tannins, they are there to provide some structure but do not interfere with the flavor. There is a decent chocolate covered cherry finish.
Campo Viejo Tempranillo ($10.99) – Deep cherry color that suggests a young, vibrant wine. Rich and intense ripe red fruit with oak nuances and subtle tones of vanilla and sweet spices. On the palate it is true to the nose, perfumed, soft, and fresh with a long length on the palate that leaves memories of red fruit, vanilla, and cocoa. Pairs perfectly with pasta, poultry and fresh light cheeses, grilled chicken, and small bites.
Placio De Bornos Verdejo ($16.99) – Straw-like yellow color with fresh green tones. Hugely aromatic, with tropical fruit, tangerine, lemongrass and lemon thyme. Fruity notes with anise and minerals, typical of the Verdejo grape. Full in the mouth, well structured, dense and persistent with a lingering aftertaste. The wine has great length and a delicious mouth-filling richness, and finished with a precise acid cut.
