05 Apr Special Friday Tasting!
Tonight’s tasting features one of my all time favorite wines!
Graffigna Reserve Pinot Grigio from Argentina ($14.99) – Elegant, harmonious and delicate, full of fresh flower and fruit aromas, this young, aromatic and subtle wine is the product of the utmost care and exclusive treatment. Bright clear gold. Hints of jasmine and notes of white fruits like peach and apricot, with a refined finish. Pair with stews, seasoned ethnic food, such as Peruvian, Mexican and Indian, as well as Asian dishes and cheeses.
The Original Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon from California ($14.99) – After the primary fermentation of the Cabernet, a portion of the wine was ultra-filtered to refine tannins and remove bitterness, while retaining structure and increasing concentration. Grape sourcing was primarily northern valley (Lodi and Delta). Warm fermentation (80-85F) was used to provide great color, structure and fruit characters to this wine. The wine was stored for a period of 4-9 months in stainless steel tanks to preserve all aromas and flavors. The palate is rich and intense with flavors of mocha, dark fruit and hints of oak. Bold flavors of blackberry and black cherry, supported by firm tannins, brown spice and a dark chocolate espresso finish.
Cain Cuvee NV8 from California ($39.99) – I have been a big fan of this wine for many years. I just got another case in and thought it would be a good night to share some with all of you. Here are some of the winemaker’s notes: The Cain Cuvée reflects our vision of what a classical red wine can be. Our intention is to create a Cabernet blend that sits lightly and refreshingly on the palate. At the same time, we are guided by the same criteria that drive all of our winemaking—complexity, balance, and finish. We deliberately style this wine so that it is at once more sleek and more approachable, while at the same time preserving a fresh vibrancy. We’re walking a tightrope here. It is along this dynamic tension that we can find a wine that is both lively and captivating, and, at the same time, immediately delicious. Because the wine is balanced and not overripe, it has great aging potential, and it can even improve for a day or two after it’s been opened. Another unique element of the Cain Cuvée is our use of two primary vintages in the blend— in this case there are actually three vintages. The NV8 consists primarily of 2008 (hence the “8”) complemented with a significant proportion of the excellent 2007 vintage and a soupçon of the 2006, which we love. All of these factors contribute to a wine that is both well balanced, surprisingly complex, and with a unique personality. To sum up: it will hold your attention for many evenings and many years to come. 48% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot.
