Old Favorites to Taste Since Winter is Back!

Let’s taste some old favorites for this wintery Friday night!

Since it feels like a winter day, I thought we should bring out a couple big reds and a favorite white to taste tonight.  If you haven’t tasted these for a while here is your chance.  Come in out of the rain and cold and enjoy some great wines at Chateau La Vin!

Tasting 5-3-13

Greystone Cellars Sauvignon Blanc from California ($14.99) – Since 1995, one of Greystone’s neighbors, Markham Vineyards, has been producing a small amount of Greystone Cellars® wines exclusively for the Culinary Institute of America.  With the national launch, a portion of the proceeds go to the Culinary Institute.  The Sauvignon Blanc:  Color – Light straw.  Aroma – Aromas of pear and citrus.  Taste – Bright acidity matched with flavors of Meyer lemon and a hint of white peach.

Colome Estate Malbec from Argentina ($26.99) – “Colome’s Estate Malbec is annually one of Argentina’s better values. The 2009 Estate Malbec (85%) contains small amounts of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah in its blend. It spent 15 months in barrel, 30% new American, the balance second-use French with the fruit sourced from some of the world’s most elevated vineyards. It is purple in color with a captivating nose of cedar, Asian spices, incense, violets, black licorice, espresso, and assorted back fruits. Made in a racy style with uplifting acidity, it is a beautifully proportioned offering with exceptional elegance and length. Give it several more years of cellaring and drink this fantastic value from 2013 to 2024.” 92 Points The Wine Advocate  85% Malbec, 8% Tannat, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Syrah, 2% Petit Verdot.

Duckhorn Vineyards Napa Valley Merlot from California ($51.99) – This wine displays all of the benefits of slow, even ripening during a mild growing season. Though there is fullness and a lush character to this Merlot, there is also restraint and elegance. To add complexity, the final wine has been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Promising aromas of cherry, red plum, raspberry, and dried herbs lead to a clean fresh entry with impeccably balanced acidity supporting intense red fruit flavors of cranberry, plum and raspberry. Round, supple tannins provide an enticing framework for the flavors and contribute to a lingering finish.  “A lovely Merlot, this is pure, vibrant and elegant. It has classic cherry, red-currant and cedar flavors, and while there’s a sweetness at the core, the finish is thoroughly dry.” 91 Points Wine Enthusiast.
