Today’s Tasting and Tuesday’s Tasting with Kysela Importers!

Today’s Tasting and Tuesday’s Tasting with Kysela Importers!

Today we are tasting two unique wines.  The Spur Red Blend from California and Barista from South Africa!

The Spur Red Blend ($21.99) – The Spur celebrates the esteemed art of blending, combining the best the vineyard has to offer to handcraft the most interesting and sumptuous wine possible. This wine displays enticing aromas and flavors of black cherry and blueberry, with hints of chocolate, anise, spice and toasted oak. Mature tannins and balanced acidity lead to a smooth, lingering finish.  It is a blend of 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec,  21% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petite Sirah and4% Merlot.

Barista Pinotage from South Africa ($18.99) – This is a very unique wine that we have had in the shop for a while and sold out of a number of times.  We have more in and many of you have not had the opportunity to taste it, so I am opening it up again today.  In 1925, the then Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, Abraham Perold, had the idea to create a proudly South African cultivar.  He crossed-bred Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (known as Hermitage in South Africa), and Pinotage was the result.  Barista has a burst of intense, rich coffee and chocolate aromas with ripe nuances of mulberry, plum and Maraschino cherries. The sweet aromas of vanilla and banana follow through on the palate and create with the ripe, luscious tannins a wine ready to be enjoyed

Kysela Importers  are the 2011 Wine Enthusiast’s Importer of the Year!

Robert M. Parker, Jr.’s THE WINE ADVOCATE, Issue 105 had this to say about Kysela Imprters: “Fran Kysela, unlike most Americans, was born into a family that consumed and appreciated fine wine. One of the youngest specialty importers, Kysela began his career as the national sales manager for the import arm of Kermit Lynch’s sprawling wine business. Subsequently, he worked briefly for another high quality importer, Weygandt-Metzler in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Inevitably, Kysela founded his own firm, dedicated to discovering high quality top estates in France and Italy [and Portugal].

Kysela’s offerings all tend to be extremely pure, ripe, fruity wines…in short, faithful reflections of their appellations. He is not an aggressive interventionalistic importer à la Robert Kacher (or to a lesser extent, Neal Rosenthal, Eric Salomon, or Peter Weygandt), but neither does he permit his producers to take a laissez-faire approach to their work. In a few short years Kysela has emerged as one of the finest palates and selectors of top wine, whether it be an inexpensive Muscadet or a top of the line Burgundy.”
