07 Apr Tasting Wines for Easter!
We have three wines to taste today that will go great with your Easter meal!
Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel from California ($15.99) – Deep purple-red in color, our Mother Clone Zinfandel is full bodied and intense with classic Dry Creek Valley characteristics: aromas of ripe blackberry and spice, jammy fruit flavors framed with subtle black pepper. Chosen as one of the Best in the West for $25 or less by Wine Spectator Magazine.
Domaine Galevan Paroles de Femme Cotes du Rhone from France ($17.99) – The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Paroles de Femme (meaning “words of a woman”). This sexy deep ripe full-bodied effort is a blend of 60% Grenache 20% Mourvedre and the rest equal parts Cinsault and Carignan. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by abundant amounts of Provencal typicity as well as roasted herb meat juice kirsch and black raspberry fruit notes. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. Score – (89-90) Robert Parker.
Santorini Assyrtiko White Wine from Greece ($26.99) – #44 in Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wines of 2011 and #83 in Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2011. 91 points Wine Spectator: “Juicy and rich, with concentrated pear, apple and white fruit flavors that are backed up by plenty of fresh acidity. The intense finish features mineral notes, joined by sea salt and white pepper. Should turn creamy with time in the cellar. Drink now through 2020.” (09/11) 90 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2010 Santorini is Assyrtiko, of course, and it is a big, burly one, coming in at 14.2% alcohol (a jump over typical 13.5s and the listed 13.2 for the 2009, due to weather conditions. Sigalas, on the back label, boldly recommends cellaring this for two years before consumption, not exactly typical for Greek whites. His wines certainly show very steely when young and age better than most, so take his recommendation to heart. For many of his wines, two years may not be enough, although that should work here. After decanting this, the wine showed a lot better, integrating its parts, showing fine fruit and an unusually ripe fruit flavor nuance that the 2009 did not have. It seemed quite delicious at times, but like many Santorinis it has an underlying hard edge to it in its youth. It came around fairly quickly and mostly handled its alcohol well, although, tasted next to the 2009, it seemed more obvious.” (06/11)
