PraiaVinho Verde, Portugal $14.99
Praia, which means beach in Portuguese, is well balanced and very refreshing. This slightly spritzy wine is full of fruity flavors, with a lasting peach flavor finish. Pair this smooth and fresh wine with fish, seafood, white meat and salads.
2010 Picpoul de Pinet, Coteaux de Languedoc, France $10.99
Citrus and exotic fruit dominate this fresh, crisp and lively wine from the South of France. Well-balanced with good acidity, a perfect match to seafood and shellfish.
2010 Palacios de Bornos Verdelho, Rueda, Spain $16.99
#42 in the TOP 100 BEST BUY– Wine Enthusiast (November 2011), 90 pts – “Zesty and clean with pure grapefruit and passion fruit aromas. It’s charged up but perfectly balanced, with bright, focused citrus and pineapple flavors. Lemony acidity keeps the finish rolling, then throw in some chive and fresh greens and you have a spot-on Verdejo.”
2008 Castelmaure Col de Vents, Corbieres, France $14.99
A blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache and 15% Syrah grown in the Corbieres A.O.C. of the Languedoc growing region of southern France. This is an example of the type of wine the average Frenchmen drinks on a daily basis, some of the French wines imported to the US are tailored to the American market, but the Col de Vents is French wine made for French people. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and the alcohol content is 13.5%. The color is bright, shiny cherry red. The nose is plum, dried cherry and a little pepper. The first flavors are tart red berries, followed by tea and chocolate covered cherries. The mid-palate brings softer plum and spice, the finish keeps going on and on. The tannins are light, but there is plenty of structure and balance.
2006 Burgo Vieja, Rioja, Spain $22.99
90 pts, Stephen Tanzer – A blend of 85 percent tempranillo grapes, 10 percent garnacha and 5 percent carignan. The color is an entrancing deep ruby with a dark violet rim and a purple center that almost pulses with intensity. Scents of tobacco leaf, sandalwood, bacon fat and tar are woven with vivid notes of black and red currants and cherries and undertones of rose petal and fruitcake; give the wine a few moments in the glass and it accumulates hints of leather, cloves, sandalwood and green peppercorns. All of these qualities, including spiced and macerated black and blue fruit flavors, are bound by vibrant acidity that arrows straight to a sleek, spice-laden finish concluding with a final fillip of lavender and licorice. Alcohol content is a very comfortable 13.5 percent. Drink now through 2015 or ’16 with roasted chicken, game birds or hearty stews. Excellent.
2009 Busi Chianti Rufina, Italy $15.99
Fresh, fruity, with classic tart cherry. Fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperatures for 7 to 8 days, with an additional 3 to 4 days on the skins. The wine is then racked and goes through malolactic. It is then racked again and stays another 7 months in stainless steel.
2010 Maipe Malbec Riserva, Mendoza, Argentina $19.99
90 Points The Wine Advocate– “My three favorite Maipe red wines include the 2009 Malbec Reserve, the winery’s top selection that is aged in wood for 12 months. A dense blue/purple color is followed by a big, sweet, floral (acacias), blueberry, blackberry, coffee, and white chocolate-scented bouquet. Remarkably rich and heady, with a full-bodied mouthfeel and silky tannins, it should be consumed over the next 2-3 years.”
2010 Thorne-Clarke Shotfire Shiraz, Australia $22.99
90 points, Robert Parker– 2009 Shotfire Shiraz Comments Deep red colour, with a lifted and intense nose of blackberry fruit, sweet spice and dark chocolate. The palate is very rich and flavoursome with blackberry and plum fruit. In addition to the primary fruit characters there is plenty of complexity in this wine with spice and earthy notes. There is heaps of mouth filling flavour complemented by chalky tannins. There is great length of fruit as well.
It is going to be a great event!
